Roaring Megs restaurant in Queenstown has taken out the Central Otago & Lakes District Lamb Dish of the Year competition for the second year running, with its confit of lamb shoulder and herb-crusted Canterbury lamb cutlets.
“A big thank you to all our customers who voted for us and enjoyed our lamb; we’ll be aiming for the hat trick next year,” said Roaring Megs’ co-owner, Sharon Jeanneret.
Roaring Megs has long been recognised as a consistent producer of top quality lamb cuisine, attaining the Beef + Lamb Excellence Award for the last 14 years. Megs also won the inaugural People’s Choice Award in the region at the end of last year.
As is typical of this now three-year old contest, the results were close. Just one and a half marks separated the top three participating restaurants, with almost all 12 achieving an average over 90 marks out of 100. Runner up was Pier 19, also in Queenstown, with newcomer Rata Dining a close third. The competition attracted 800 entries, with large increases in entry numbers this year from the sole Wanaka representative, Relishes Café, and Wild Earth Restaurant in Cromwell.
“This competition celebrates the high quality lamb cuisine produced by many restaurants and cafés in the Central Otago & Lakes District area. With an increase in entry numbers this year, we’re seeing quality and quantity, which is great for both farming and foodservice. The Golden Lamb Awards champion all those involved in producing the best lamb in the world, from pasture to plate; congratulations to all this year’s winners” says Rod Slater, chief executive, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Inc.
The results were announced at the 2013 Golden Lamb Awards on Friday evening, at the Upper Clutha A & P Show, during which prizes also went to the farmers and processors producing the most tender, tasty lamb in New Zealand. The winning restaurant receives a certificate and Magnum of Mt Difficulty 2009 Pinot Noir.
