Leading meat exporter and processor Alliance Group has won a prestigious China business award.

The company was named winner of the HSBC Excellence in NZ/China Trade category at the New Zealand China Trade Association awards last week. The award recognises New Zealand companies excelling in growing their product or service sales in China.

The company was also a finalist for the New Zealand China Trade Association’s supreme award.

Alliance Group has been working in China since the mid-1990s and is now the largest exporter of New Zealand lamb to the country. The co-operative began exporting to traders in Dalian in the mid-1990s and has been working with in-market partner Grand Farm since 2000. Grand Farm is the best known distributor and marketer of top quality red meat in Northern China.

Murray Brown, general manager, marketing, Alliance Group, said, “This award reflects the hard work and energy the co-operative has invested in China. It is also a credit to our suppliers who are producing high quality stock for this important market.

“We value our partnership with Grand Farm and we see further opportunities for the company in China as we look to grow and expand our various lamb and mutton cuts into the country from lower valued cuts to higher end retail and food service products.

“New Zealand has become an important supplier of protein to China, particularly as tariffs reduce and the country’s population grows.”

Earlier this year, Alliance Group and Grand Farm began developing a six-point blueprint known as Grand Alliance, which is designed to further grow business between the two companies.

The blueprint includes the launch of a consumer research programme in China, new product development and ensuring Alliance Group products continue to meet the changing tastes of Chinese consumers.

The consumer research programme, funded by Alliance Group, Beef + Lamb NZ Ltd, and Grand Farm, will see Chinese consumers surveyed on the taste and quality of New Zealand lamb, compared to that of Chinese and Inner Mongolian lamb.

China is now Alliance Group’s largest export for lamb and mutton by volume and value.

The award was presented to Alliance Group at the awards ceremony in Auckland on Thursday 30 May.
