Sporting stars set to judge NZ’s best lamb

Sarah Walker and head judge Graham Hawkes at 2013 GlammiesNew Zealand Olympic gold medallist Lisa Carrington and silver medallist Sarah Walker will put their taste buds to the test in the 2014 Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) Golden Lamb Awards, aka the Glammies.

The two B+LNZ Iron Maidens, will form part of the judging panel at Upper Clutha A & P Show in Wanaka on 7 March.

The competition, sponsored by Zoetis, is returning for its eighth year and aims to find the most tasty and tender lamb farmers and retailers have to offer.

This is familiar territory for Walker who has helped choose the Grand Champion for the past two years.

“It’s an honour to be asked to assist again in this year’s Glammies, as it recognises the hard work and dedication of farmers nationwide, and I can always expect to be tasting delicious lamb” says Walker.

Carrington is equally looking forward to the awards.

“New Zealand is renowned for its quality of lamb, so being able to taste and select the best of the best alongside Sarah and the other judges is really exciting” says Carrington.

Selecting the prize winner is no easy task as the Iron Maidens are required to judge the best 20 entries, which excelled in the initial scientific assessment of yield, tenderness, succulence and colour at Carne Technologies.

The competition is supported by processing plants across the country. These include: AFFCO, Alliance Group Ltd, Ashburton Meat Processors Ltd, Auckland Meat Processors/Wilson Hellaby, Blue Sky Meats, Cabernet Foods/Kintyre Meats, CMP Canterbury, Harris Meats, Land Meat NZ, Lean Meats, Progressive Meats, Silver Fern Farms, Taylor Preston/Ken Wilson Meats.
