Deer industry showing leadership, says venison exporter

The New Zealand deer industry is showing leadership once again, according to one of the five venison exporters involved in the industry’s Passion2Profit (P2P) Primary Growth Partnership, aimed at lifting profitability for the industry.

First Light Foods’ managing director Gerard Hickey writes in the latest Deer Industry News hitting the mailboxes this week that Advance Parties are hitting critical mass.

“Twenty five groups have now formed and 30 are expected by year end,” he says. “An estimated 20 percent of commercial deer farmers are now engaged, which we are told is a key trigger for driving industry change.”

He also points to the Marketers’ Working Group (MWG) “that is gathering momentum” and activities in Benelux, China and, most recently, in Germany that is repositioning venison away from its traditional winter game menu slots.

“Exporters are on a roll,” Hickey says. “Market diversification is growing during a tme of supply shortage so that the industry will be more robust and in a stronger position when the deer herd rebuilds and production increases. This diversification is spreading demand, pricing and risk across many more markets than before. It also directly supports the P2P strategic objectives of increasing non-seasonal venison sales and increasing sales to new markets.”

Also included in the June/July 2017 edition are from the five venison exporters’ presentations at the Deer Industry Conference at the end of May, regulatory challenges for the velvet sector which stays positive, technical updates for deer producers, key points from the NZ Deer Farmers Association annual conference and the Advance Party Conference, along with the latest venison and velvet facts and figures and the MSD Animal Health Photographic Awards. Also included is the Deeresearch annual report and, sadly, an obituary for a leading light, Brian Wellington. He will be missed by friends and colleagues.
