Hayden Montgomery addressing NZACCC 2019

The world is not on track to reduce emissions, noted Hayden Montgomery, special representative for the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). In his presentation, he outlined the global challenge ahead for agriculture – to limit agricultural emissions to about six to eight gigatonnes carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2-e) by 2030, meaning a reduction of one gigatonne a year to stay within the 2°C scenario by 2030. He identified the challenges as climate change impacts making the job even more difficult, measuring the data, a “disconnect between industry code of practice and public policy,”, scarcity of capability and capacity in many parts of the world, the time needed for national systems to adjust, and limited examples of true international, sustained investment in science. New Zealand’s involvement in the GRA is one example, however. “Actions that New Zealand takes can have global impact,” he said. “Things we do really matter and are making a difference.”
