New thinking will dominate at the 2018 Red Meat Sector Conference, set to take place in Napier’s Convention Centre on 29 and 30 July.
Delegates from all parts of the sector are expected to attend the annual event, the eighth time it has been staged jointly by the Meat Industry Association (MIA) and Beef + Lamb NZ Ltd (B+LNZ).
Recently, MIA has freshly launched its new Research and Development Strategy, while Beef + Lamb NZ has revealed the brand, new ‘Taste Pure Natural’ origin brand for New Zealand – that has been fully supported by MIA member meat exporting companies – and its environmental strategy. These are all examples of the new sectoral thinking, inspired in part by the RMSC goal of bringing the sector’s people together to learn from examples of best practice and freely network at the previous seven RMSCs, says MIA chairman John Loughlin.
“These have all drawn on intelligence from the red meat sector’s ‘blueprint’, the Red Meat Sector Strategy released in 2010, but are updated to explore the current opportunities for New Zealand red meat in the new trading world which incorporates alternative proteins, climate change and disruption to global trade norms,” says Loughlin, who promises more of the same at this year’s event.
Loughlin and new B+LNZ chair Andrew Morrison will greet delegates on the opening Sunday night with the Hamburg-Sud Welcome Cocktail Function at the Napier Convention Centre.
The next day, Monday 30 July, to the pair will welcome participants and co-facilitate the conference. Three sessions will: set the scene domestically and globally; consider disruption; and reflect on aspects of the Red Meat Story, that will underlie the new origin brand.
Setting the scene globally are two confirmed speakers, at the time of writing: Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade deputy secretary, trade and economic group Vangelis Vitalis, who will give his insights on ‘Trade in troubled waters’ and the implications for New Zealand; and Tim Hunt, Rabobank’s general manager food and agribusiness research and advisory.
The Convention Centre is also the venue for the Maersk Line Gala Dinner. The shipping line is pleased to support the sector’s annual event, once again, says Maersk Line Oceania managing director Gerard Morrison.
“We are also engaged in new thinking to meet global demands, especially in the development of smart assets and digital supply chain integration,” he says.
“Leveraging digital innovation across our brands will present many opportunities to deliver a better customer experience for physical movement of goods, customer service and the simplicity of our end-to-end solutions,” he says.
The sector’s main event of the year is well supported once again.
