Texas BBQ Foods, the brand behind New Zealand’s most authentic smoked beef brisket, pork belly, cheeses and butter, has been named a finalist in the Australian 2019 Food & Beverage Industry Awards. They are one of only two New Zealand food brands to make the cut this year.

The Taranaki-based business has been nominated for two categories – Meat, Poultry & Smallgoods (for the Texas BBQ Foods Beef Brisket), and Best in Design. The manufacturer’s Inglewood Meat Smoking Facility has been entered into the latter category for manufacturers that have implemented an integrated design and build, including automation, and has an environmental benefit, and reduced running costs. Being a finalist also means the brand is automatically entered into the Best of the Best Award, which celebrates the most exciting product of the year.

Established by Australia’s Food & Beverage Industry News magazine in 2004, the awards recognise and reward best practice and innovation in food and beverage manufacturing in Australia and New Zealand. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Sydney on Thursday 18 July.

Ash Peters, Texas BBQ Foods
Co-founder Ash Peters set up the company just a year ago and is excited to find them on the world stage already.

“The Texas BBQ Foods brand is still very young – we started the business just over a year ago – so to be recognised on the world stage is very exciting,” explains Ash Peters, founder of Texas BBQ Foods.

“It’s a real credit to our passionate staff, our customers and the supermarkets, such as New World New Plymouth, that put their faith in the products and got us started. We’re looking forward to flying the flag for New Zealand and Taranaki produce when we head to the awards ceremony in Australia next month.”

Peters launched Texas BBQ Foods in 2017 with co-founder, Jerynn Peters when they realised how popular their authentic slow-cooked, smoked foods were proving with friends and family.

Ready to eat hot or cold, the specially designed packs mean the slow-cooked meats can be heated in seconds, tasting as good as it does straight from the smoker.

Meat cuts are hand seasoned with a traditional Texas-style dry rub. They are then slow smoked and cooked with mesquite (a wood imported from North America) for 20+ hours to create a full, genuine flavour. Even the cheese and butter from Texas BBQ Foods is smoked for three hours to get a true smoke flavour with a sweet finish.

Texas BBQ Foods has already racked up a number of accolades and awards. This includes winning the chilled food section of NZ Artisan Awards 2018 for the Texas BBQ Foods Smoked Pork Belly and Beef Brisket, and placing as a finalist for the Smoked Butter.

Products including the Beef Brisket, Double Smoked Pork Belly, Smoked Cheese and Smoked Butter can be found at Countdown, New World and Pak’nSave stores throughout the North and South Islands.
